Identifying Leptin Resistance
Simply put, Leptin resistance is when your brain doesn’t get the message to stop consuming food. Normally when a person eats there is a signal output by our brain that gives us the feeling of fullness. However, in individuals with Leptin resistance it has been medically shown that this occurrence never happens. Many individuals that are overweight are not being told by their own body that “enough is enough.”
New scientific studies are showing that the more excess weight an individual carries, the higher their Leptin levels are. When you’re in a hungry state of mind your Leptin hormone is responsible for giving you a mental ‘reward’ for consuming nutrients. It triggers the reward centers and chemicals of the brain in order to stay alive. However, the Leptin resistance indicates to the body that it’s time to eat but never gives the individual the cue in which to stop.
A study was conducted on 218 families where plasma was donated for research. Out of those 218 families, 968 of the individuals were obese with Leptin issues. Out of the results, 63% of the issues could be identified merely from Leptin results from the individuals blood.
Addressing The Issue
Tackling your Leptin issues is something that will take will power and determination to overcome. It won’t be easy but it will reward your body and mind to take control of this problem. The main ways in which you can reverse and deal with Leptin resistance is as follows:
- Avoid processed foods and unhealthy beverages
- Avoid sugary drinks and foods
- Organic and whole foods are your best options
- Eat lean protein with every meal
- Eat generous amounts of healthy fat (olive oil, nuts, avocado, etc.)
- Drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day
A new modern Leptin diet called The Venus Factor by John Barban has tailored the diet towards women and created a huge online support community. My former client Mary has done a great job describing it on her personal weight loss blog.
These are all natural ways that a person can reverse the effects of Leptin issues and start to trigger their body to feel full again. If you’ve noticed that you never feel satisfied after a meal, or feel an uncomfortable feeling, you may be dealing with Leptin issues in your body. Doctors and scientists are looking for medical ways to help reverse this problem but we must make healthy choices! Being conscious of what we’re eating and drinking is the first step forward.
